Do these things before leaving. Keep the important details somewhere you can reach without mobile data.
01 · Get your documents ready
- Confirm entry requirementsCheck with the Chinese embassy or consulate for your passport nationality, travel purpose, dates and itinerary. Do not infer visa eligibility from your departure country.
- Check your actual permissionConfirm passport validity requirements, permitted stay and any transit conditions before booking. Save the official guidance you relied on.
- Keep copies separatelySave passport and booking copies securely. Carry your original travel document for identity checks; a screenshot is not a replacement.
This checklist does not assess or guarantee entry. Hong Kong and Macao have separate entry arrangements.
02 · Set up your phone
- Payment appsInstall Alipay and optionally WeChat from your official app store. Set up your account and eligible bank card.
- Mobile dataCheck your phone is unlocked and compatible with your chosen SIM or eSIM. Save activation instructions before departure.
- Navigation and translationTest a map service with your hotel’s Chinese address. Download available offline language packs. Do not assume all overseas apps will work on mainland networks.
- Power and accessPack a compatible charger and adapter. Check your airline’s current power-bank rules before packing.
Your first-day action plan
- Land: keep documents at handFollow immigration signs. Have your passport, required entry documents and accommodation details available. Collect luggage and follow customs instructions.
- Connect: test your dataTurn on your chosen plan and load a page. If it fails, follow the provider’s saved instructions or ask the airport information desk for a staffed telecom counter.
- Pay: check your backupConfirm your wallet is usable. Locate a staffed exchange counter or compatible ATM if you need RMB cash.
- Move: use a planned transferCheck service hours before choosing metro or rail. Follow signs to the official taxi queue, or the pickup zone shown in your ride-hailing app.
- Check in: show your bookingPresent your original passport and reservation. Confirm check-in and accommodation registration arrangements with your host, especially for a private stay.
- Eat: start simpleAsk for a picture menu, point to an item and show a phrase. For allergies, confirm ingredients and preparation directly with staff.
